From Chanel’s Spring 2011 collection under Karl Lagerfeld, this oversized evening clutch is known as the Grand Palais Clutch, a particularly artistic piece from the house’s early-2010s era. Contemporary references to the collection describe it as a sequin-embroidered lambskin evening clutch inspired by the Grand Palais—the monumental Paris exhibition hall where Chanel staged many of Lagerfeld’s most memorable runway productions.

The design translates the architecture of the Grand Palais into embroidery: thousands of tonal black sequins are arranged in sweeping radial lines and geometric sections across the leather, creating an almost architectural pattern rather than traditional Chanel quilting. A sculptural gunmetal interlocking CC positioned at the lower corner provides the only prominent branding. The elongated 12.6-inch silhouette was designed as an evening clutch, with a simple fold-over flap and snap closure keeping the focus on the elaborate surface work.

Condition Report

Very Good pre-owned condition  8.8/10  slight visible age-related wear. The leather shows creasing, surface rubbing and wear along the flap edges, piping and corners. The intricate sequin embroidery still beautiful  . Gunmetal CC hardware shows light surface wear. Interior leather presents with creasing, scratches and signs of use. Overall silhouette remains well defined.

Curators Perspective 

This is the type of Chanel piece that deserves to be identified by its collection and design story, rather than simply called a “sequin clutch.” The Grand Palais connection gives the embroidery meaning—the pattern is architectural, turning one of the locations most closely associated with Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel shows into the decoration of the bag itself.

It is also a wonderfully unconventional Chanel: no chain strap, no traditional diamond quilting and very little overt branding. Instead, the craftsmanship and oversized proportions carry the design. For a collector interested in Karl Lagerfeld-era runway and archival Chanel, it is a much more interesting piece than its understated black palette initially suggests.
